Andy Fowler

Spending virtually all of his time on drawings and paintings Andy found his own recognisable style or fingerprint as an artist. His initial drive to paint and draw came from being a rather introvert and shy child. He found that he could express himself through being creative. Andy says: "My more recent work is a result of painting without, or with very little, in the way of props. It was a challenge to see how painting shapes and lines could trigger an idea and develop into a painting without any initial intention to create a pre-planned narrative".

"Some of the challenges I face are lighting, tonal contrast and colour balance which I judged not by the object I am studying but by constantly making decisions on the piece I am working on in less limiting way, which forces me to be more free in my use of colour, form and tone which can be sometimes wildly exaggerated and surreal. Sometimes a narrative or subject evolves subconsciously I am sure... This is why I enjoy the freedom of painting in this manner and perhaps it says a little more about me as an artist or as a person than if I persisted with a more traditional approach".

Andy was born in 1970 to British military parents stationed in Germany. Andy is currently living and working in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
